How to Replace a Car Battery, Step by Step

Published Oct 23, 2026 · 6 min read · By Hassan, Owner of Roadmate Services

Yes, you can replace a car battery yourself on most cars, with a wrench and about seven steps. Take the negative terminal off first, put the positive back on first, and keep the new battery clamped down tight.

Most of the time goes on finding the right battery and reaching the old one. Before you buy, make sure the battery is really the problem: signs your car battery is dying covers that.

Seven steps. Fewer than most coffee orders.

Tools and safety before you start

  • A wrench or socket set. Many terminal nuts are 10 mm; the hold-down may need an extension.
  • A battery terminal brush or a wire brush.
  • Gloves and safety glasses. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • No smoking, flames or sparks. Batteries give off explosive hydrogen gas.
  • Rings and watches off, and never rest a tool across the top of the battery.

The gas and acid warnings come from Clarios’ battery safety and handling guide. A car battery is heavy too: WyoTech puts most at 40 to 60 pounds.

The hardest tool to find is usually the 10 mm socket you put somewhere safe last time.

How to remove a car battery

Find the battery

Most batteries sit under the hood near a front corner. Some cars keep it in the trunk, under the rear seat or under a front seat, with jump posts under the hood. The owner’s manual shows where. Carmakers seem to treat battery placement as a game of hide-and-seek they always win.

Disconnect the terminals: negative first

Loosen the negative (−, black) clamp and lift it off, then tuck the cable aside. Then do the positive (+, red). Our guide on how to disconnect a car battery explains the order in detail.

Take off the hold-down and lift it out

Remove the bracket or strap that holds the battery down. Lift the battery straight up with both hands, keep it upright and bend your knees.

Think of it as a big bag of dog food that does not wag back.

How to install a new car battery

Clean the terminals and tray

Brush the cable clamps until the metal is bright. Wipe the tray and check it for acid damage. Make sure the new battery matches the old one’s group size and type, and that its posts sit on the same sides. AAA also suggests matching the cold cranking amps (CCA).

When installing a car battery, which terminal goes on first

The positive goes on first, then the negative. Set the battery in, fit the hold-down until the battery cannot move, then fit the red clamp, then the black. Tighten until the clamps will not twist by hand, and no further.

Check it starts, then reset the clock and radio

Start the car. Then reset the clock, the radio presets and, on some cars, the automatic windows. A blinking 12:00 is just the car letting you know it noticed.

How long does it take to change a car battery?

For a DIY swap, it depends on where the battery sits and how many times you have done it. A battery under a seat or behind trunk panels takes longer than one under the hood. Our technicians take 15 to 45 minutes on site, depending on the vehicle.

Cars that need more than a wrench

  • Battery registration: BMW, other European vehicles and many newer cars need the new battery registered with a scan tool so they charge it correctly.
  • Start-stop cars: many came with an AGM battery. Replace it with an AGM, not a cheaper standard battery.
  • Trunk and under-seat batteries: more trim to remove, and remote terminals to get right.

A BMW X4 customer of ours booked about 2 hours ahead. Installation took about 30 minutes, and the BMW needed its new battery registered, so we did that on site as well. Some cars want paperwork, even for a battery.

What to do with the old battery

Do not put it in the trash. Most battery sellers take old ones back for recycling, and when we replace a battery, we take the old one away. The core charge is already included in our price.

Rather not do it yourself? Battery replacement in Columbus

If the car still starts and the battery is easy to reach, a DIY swap or a parts store is fine, and you do not need us. If it will not start, or the battery is hidden or needs registering, we come to you. We fit DieHard batteries from Advance Auto: Silver with a 2-year warranty, Gold with 3 years, AGM with 4. Common sizes are on the truck.

Already bought a battery and just want it fitted? We can do that too. If it turns out to be the wrong battery for the car, there is an extra charge, so check the group size before you call.

Battery replacement is quoted by phone, so you see the price before anyone drives to you. As Hassan puts it: “We see people lose time at a mechanic or parts store that does not handle every vehicle, or picks the wrong battery. Call us and we come to you.” Our car battery cost guide compares what batteries cost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace my car battery myself?

Yes, on most cars with the battery under the hood. Skip the DIY if the battery is swollen or leaking, hides in the trunk or under a seat, or your car needs the new battery registered.

Which battery terminal do I connect first?

The positive (red, +) goes on first and the negative (black, −) last. Taking a battery out is the reverse: negative off first.

What is the correct order to replace a car battery?

Negative off, positive off, hold-down off, old battery out. New battery in, hold-down tight, positive on, negative on.

Can an auto parts store install a car battery?

Many parts stores install a battery you buy from them, often for free, when it is easy to reach. Trunk or under-seat batteries and cars that need registration are harder in a store parking lot, so ask first.

How long does it take to change a car battery?

For a DIY swap it depends on where the battery sits and how often you have done it. Our technicians take 15 to 45 minutes on site, depending on the vehicle.

The bottom line

Negative off, positive off, old battery out. New battery in, clamped tight, positive on, negative on. If the battery hides, needs registering or the car will not start, let a technician do it where the car is parked.
