Oil Pressure Light On? What It Means and What to Do

Published Oct 23, 2026 · 5 min read · By Hassan, Owner of Roadmate Services

A red oil pressure light while driving means oil is not reaching the engine properly. Get safe, switch the engine off and do not drive on it. Low oil pressure can wreck an engine fast, so this is one warning light that does not wait for the weekend.

The red oil can is not the yellow “change oil” reminder. The reminder is a polite note on the fridge. The red oil can is the engine pulling the fire alarm.

Oil pressure low? Stop the engine, then do this

  1. Get safe first. Signal, get off the travel lanes and turn on your hazards. On I-70, I-71 or I-270, if you cannot get well clear of traffic, stay in the car with your seat belt on. If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 911.
  2. Switch the engine off. Do not leave it idling to see if the light goes away.
  3. Wait, then check the dipstick. AAA says to let the car sit for at least 10 minutes on level ground. Wipe the dipstick, push it fully in, pull it out and read the level.
  4. Oil low: add the oil your manual specifies. Then restart and watch the light. Volkswagen’s warning-light guide says to run the engine for a few seconds; if the light goes out, you can continue. Drive gently to a mechanic soon.
  5. Oil full, or the light comes back: do not drive. Leave the engine off and call for a tow.

What does low oil pressure mean?

The oil pump pushes oil to the bearings and other moving parts, and that thin film is all that keeps metal off metal. Low oil pressure means the oil is not arriving with enough force, so parts start grinding. Damage can happen in minutes, which is why the advice is to switch off, not to finish the trip.

Oil is cheaper than an engine. That is the whole post in six words.

Oil pressure light vs. oil change light

The oil pressure light is a red oil can, sometimes with a drip. It means stop now. The oil change reminder is usually yellow: a wrench or “oil change due”. It means book a service soon. Symbols vary by make, so check your owner’s manual.

Why the low oil pressure light comes on

Low oil level or a leak

The most common cause: the engine burns or leaks oil until the pump runs short. Oil spots where you park are not a coincidence.

Old, thin or wrong oil, or a clogged filter

Skipped oil changes leave sludge that clogs the filter, and the wrong grade can be too thin to hold pressure when hot.

Faulty sensor

Sometimes the sensor is wrong and the engine is fine. You cannot confirm that at the roadside, so treat the light as real until a mechanic says otherwise.

Failing oil pump

A worn pump cannot move enough oil, even with a full sump. This one always means a tow and a shop.

Light flickers at idle or in turns

With the level near the minimum, oil sloshes away from the pickup in corners or under braking. Check it, top it up and have it looked at.

Oil pressure light on but oil is full?

A full dipstick means the oil is there but not moving: the pump, a blocked pickup or filter, the sensor, or something inside the engine. Do not drive it “just to see”. AAA’s advice matches ours: call a tow truck.

Roadside or mechanic?

Not everything is a roadside job, and we will say so. This is not a jump-start or “drive it home” problem.

  • Oil level low: we can bring the oil your car takes, bought for your call. The technician tops it up or hands it to you, whichever you prefer. The price depends on the oil, so we quote it by phone.
  • Oil full or the light stays on: the honest answer is a tow to a mechanic. Our technicians carry a scan tool, but they cannot always diagnose an engine fault on site.

Our tow service in Columbus is estimated at $125 to $275 for tows of about 1 to 15 miles; longer tows are quoted by phone.

As Hassan puts it: when your car needs a mechanic, tow it there, and pick a company that does not double your problem. We work 6 AM to 8 PM daily and arrive in about 32 minutes on average, depending on traffic, weather and location. More in tow truck vs roadside assistance.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with the oil pressure light on?

No. A red oil pressure light means the engine is not getting enough oil. Stop as soon as it is safe and switch the engine off.

How do you fix low oil pressure?

If the level is low, a top-up may fix it for now, but a mechanic should find out where the oil went. If the level is fine, the cause is usually the filter, sensor or pump, and none of those is a roadside repair.

Why is my oil pressure light on but my oil is full?

A failing pump, a blocked pickup or filter, or a faulty sensor. You cannot tell which at the roadside, so tow it to a mechanic.

How long can an engine run with low oil pressure?

Not long, and there is no safe number to rely on. Treat every minute of running as a risk and switch it off.

Can low oil cause overheating?

Yes. Oil carries heat away from moving parts as well as lubricating them. Our overheating guide explains the temperature side.

Other warning lights: why your engine is overheating and what the battery light means.

Other warning lights and fluids: low coolant symptoms; bad fuel pump symptoms.

The bottom line

Red oil can: get safe, switch off, check the dipstick after about 10 minutes. Low oil: top up and see a mechanic soon. Full oil or a light that stays on: tow it.
