Flooded Lead Acid Car Battery vs AGM: What's the Difference?
Published Oct 23, 2026 · 5 min read · By Hassan, Owner of Roadmate Services
A flooded lead acid car battery is the classic, cheapest type, with liquid acid sloshing around the plates. An AGM battery holds the acid in glass mats, costs more, and is what most start-stop cars need. Replace like with like.
Think of flooded as the reliable sedan of batteries and AGM as the trim level with heated seats.
Quick answer: flooded, EFB, AGM, gel and lithium compared
| Type | How it holds the acid | Typical cars | Maintenance | Cost tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flooded (standard) | Liquid | Older cars without start-stop | Some need water checks | Lowest: $90 to $200 (AutoZone) |
| EFB | Liquid, tougher plates | Some basic start-stop cars | None | Between flooded and AGM |
| AGM | Soaked into glass mats | Start-stop, high electrical load, many European cars | None | Higher: $150 to $400+ (AutoZone) |
| Gel | Thickened into a gel | Rare as a car starting battery | None | Specialist |
| Lithium | Not lead acid | Some EVs and performance cars | Follow the carmaker | Highest |
| Bottom line | Fit the type your car came with. Upgrading flooded or EFB to AGM is fine; downgrading AGM is not. | |||

What is a flooded lead acid car battery?
A flooded car battery has lead plates sitting in liquid sulfuric acid. It is the oldest, cheapest design, and most older cars without start-stop left the factory with one.
Some flooded batteries have removable caps so you can top them up with distilled water. Power Sonic, a battery maker, notes that a flooded battery gives off gas while charging, so it needs ventilation.
Never open the caps near a spark or flame, and wear gloves and eye protection around battery acid.
What is an AGM battery?
AGM stands for absorbed glass mat. The acid is soaked into glass fibre mats between the plates. A glass mat battery is sealed, spill-proof, needs no water, and copes with frequent restarts and heavy electrical loads.
That is why absorbed glass mat car batteries go in start-stop cars, cars full of screens, and cars with the battery in the trunk or under a seat. Carmakers do enjoy a game of hide-the-battery.
EFB: the middle option for basic start-stop
An enhanced flooded battery (EFB) is a tougher flooded battery, still with liquid acid, built for lighter start-stop systems. It costs less than an AGM. Clarios, a battery maker, recommends replacing a factory EFB with an AGM.
Gel and lithium automotive batteries
A gel battery thickens the acid into a gel. It is rare as a car starting battery and more common in deep-cycle uses. A lithium automotive battery is not lead acid at all; it shows up in some EVs’ 12-volt systems and some performance cars. For either, follow the carmaker exactly. This is not the place to get creative.
Which battery does my car need?
The one it came with. Your car already picked its battery type; your job is to agree with it. Clarios puts it plainly: if your vehicle came with an AGM battery, it must be replaced with an AGM battery.
- Start-stop engine: AGM, or EFB if that is what the car came with.
- Many newer and European cars: AGM, and often the new battery must be registered with the car.
- Older car without start-stop: a standard flooded battery is fine.
A flooded battery in an AGM car may start it for a while, then fail early. We would rather tell you that on the phone than sell you the cheaper battery twice.
Registration matters too. A Columbus customer booked a BMW X4 battery change about 2 hours ahead. The install took about 30 minutes, and the new battery had to be registered with the car, as other European vehicles need.
How to tell if your battery is flooded or AGM
- Read the label. AGM batteries say AGM or absorbed glass mat on the top or side.
- Look for removable caps. Caps you can pry off usually mean a flooded battery.
- Check the owner’s manual. It names the type and group size.
If the label has faded, the manual has been waiting in the glove box for this exact day.
Charging and jump-starting an AGM battery
Jumping an AGM is the same as jumping any 12-volt car battery. Our jump start guide walks through it.
Battery charging for AGM is where it differs: use a charger with an AGM setting. Typical 12-volt charge voltages (market figures, not Roadmate measurements):
- Flooded: about 14.2 volts bulk charge, 13.4 volts float.
- AGM: about 14.7 volts bulk charge, 13.8 volts float.

For timing, see how long it takes to charge a car battery. A smart charger does the arithmetic, so you can go have breakfast.
What shortens AGM battery life
- Draining it flat, for example lights left on.
- Charging it on a flooded or old-style charger setting.
- Heat, which wears out every lead acid battery faster.
AAA puts typical battery life at 3 to 5 years, so have any battery tested once a year from year 3.
Battery replacement in Columbus, any type
If your car still starts, a parts store install may be enough. If not, we come to you and replace all battery types, including trunk and under-seat batteries.
- DieHard batteries, supplied directly from Advance Auto.
- Standard flooded, EFB and AGM batteries on the truck.
- Warranties: DieHard Silver 2 years, Gold 3 years, AGM 4 years.
- Registration done on site for cars that need it.
- 15 to 45 minutes on site, depending on the vehicle; quoted by phone first.
See mobile battery replacement in Columbus for details. Your car does not mind a parking lot battery change, as long as it gets the right battery.
Frequently asked questions
How do I tell if my battery is flooded or AGM?
Check the label for AGM or absorbed glass mat. Removable caps on top usually mean a flooded battery, and the owner's manual names the type your car needs.
Is it okay to jump start an AGM battery?
Yes. You jump an AGM the same way as any 12-volt battery. If it sits in the trunk or under a seat, use the jump points under the hood.
What are the disadvantages of an AGM battery?
Mainly price: AutoZone lists AGM batteries at $150 to $400 or more, against $90 to $200 for a standard flooded battery. They also need an AGM charger setting.
Can I replace an AGM battery with a flooded one?
No. Battery maker Clarios says a car that came with an AGM must get an AGM again. A flooded battery may start it at first, then fail early.
The bottom line
A flooded lead acid car battery is the cheap, proven choice for older cars without start-stop. An AGM is sealed, handles start-stop and heavy electrical loads, and costs more. Check the label or the manual, fit the type your car came with, and charge an AGM on an AGM setting.
