Brake Warning Light On? Why the Brake Light on Your Dash Is On

Published Oct 23, 2026 · 5 min read · By Hassan, Owner of Roadmate Services

A red brake warning light means the parking brake is on, the brake fluid is low, or the brake system has a fault. Release the parking brake fully first. If the light stays on, do not keep driving, and if the pedal feels soft or sinks, stop and get a tow.

The most common cause is a parking brake still on by one click: the cheapest brake repair there is.

Why is my brake light on?

The parking brake is not fully released

The same red light shows when the parking brake is set, even one click up. Release it fully and watch the light. Driving with it on wears pads and rotors fast, and the smell is not the kind anyone wants from an oven.

Low brake fluid, a leak or a hydraulic fault

A sensor in the fluid reservoir turns the light on when the level drops. The Ram owner’s manual adds that a leak in either half of the dual brake system triggers it too. A sudden drop usually means a leak, and a leak means do not drive.

Worn brake pads

Some cars have a separate yellow pad-wear icon. Many have none and squeal instead, so a quiet dashboard does not prove the pads are fine.

On for a second at startup

A bulb check. The light comes on for about two seconds, then goes out: the car clearing its throat. If it never lights at all, have it checked.

Brake light on dash while driving: what to do

  1. Get safe first. Slow down gently, leave extra stopping distance and get off the travel lanes. On I-70, I-71 or I-270, if you cannot get well clear of traffic, stay in the car with your seat belt on and hazards on. If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 911.
  2. Check the parking brake. Make sure it is fully released.
  3. Feel the pedal. With the car stopped, press it. Soft, spongy or sinking means the system is losing pressure.
  4. Look at the fluid reservoir. Check the level against the MIN mark and look for wet spots near the wheels.

Is it safe to drive with the brake warning light on?

  • Light goes out when the parking brake is released: yes, drive on.
  • Red light stays on, pedal feels normal: do not keep driving. The Mazda owner’s manual says not to drive with this light on, because the brakes may fail.
  • Soft or sinking pedal, a fluid leak, or grinding metal: do not drive. Pull over safely and get a tow in Columbus.
  • Red brake light and ABS light together: stop as soon as it is safe. The rear wheels can lock earlier in a hard stop.

ABS light vs brake warning light

The yellow ABS light covers the anti-lock system only. On most cars the normal brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop, which matters on an icy Columbus morning. Get it checked soon. The red light is about the main brakes and outranks everything else. If your dashboard looks like a holiday display you did not order, deal with the red ones first.

Roadside or brake shop?

Not everything is a roadside job, and we will say so. A soft pedal or a leak needs a tow first, not a repair where the car stopped. When the problem is worn pads or rotors, our technicians replace them where you are parked. Brake jobs depend on the car, so we quote by phone, or you can request a brake and rotor quote online. We work 6 AM to 8 PM daily, Eastern Time.

Other warning lights: the oil pressure light and the battery light.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with the brake warning light on?

Only if it goes out when you release the parking brake. If the parking brake is off and the red light stays on, do not keep driving; Mazda's manual warns the brakes may fail. With a soft or sinking pedal, get a tow.

Why is my brake light on when the parking brake is off?

Check it is fully released first; one click up keeps the light on. If it is, the usual causes are low brake fluid, a leak or a hydraulic fault. Have it checked before you drive any distance.

What is the difference between the ABS light and the brake light?

The red light covers the main brakes. The yellow ABS light covers the anti-lock system, and on most cars normal braking still works. Both on together: stop as soon as it is safe.

Does the brake light come on when pads are worn?

On some cars, through a separate yellow pad-wear icon. Many cars have no pad sensor and squeal instead, so a dark dashboard does not prove the pads are fine.

How do I turn off the brake warning light?

Fix the cause and it goes out by itself: release the parking brake fully, or have the fluid, leak or fault repaired. There is no safe reset for a red brake light with a real reason to be on.

More brake guides: low brake fluid; brake pedal goes to the floor; parking brake stuck.

The bottom line

Red brake light: release the parking brake, and if it stays on, do not keep driving. Soft pedal, leak, or red and ABS together: stop and tow. Yellow ABS or pad-wear light: book a check soon.
