Car Won't Start in Columbus? What to Check and Who to Call

Published Oct 15, 2026

Cold Ohio mornings, short trips around town and cars that sit for a few days are hard on batteries. If your car will not start in a Columbus driveway, office lot or parking garage, a few quick checks can tell you what kind of help to ask for.

First, stay safe

If you are stopped on I-270, I-71, I-70 or SR-315, turn on your hazard lights and stay buckled in if it is not safe to get out. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger. When you call for roadside help, give the road, direction of travel and nearest exit.

What the sound tells you

  • Rapid clicking, dim dash lights: the battery is usually too low to turn the engine over. A jump start often gets you going.
  • Slow, weak cranking: the battery may be worn out, especially if it is more than three or four years old or struggles every cold morning.
  • No lights, no sound at all: check that the car is in Park and try the key fob battery. A completely dead battery or loose terminal is also possible.
  • Engine cranks normally but will not fire: this is often fuel or ignition related, not the battery. If the tank might be empty, ask about fuel delivery.

Jump start or new battery?

A jump start helps when the battery is simply drained, for example after leaving the lights on. If the car needed a jump recently, dies again after a drive, or the battery is several years old, a replacement may save you a second call. Roadmate offers both a jump start service in Columbus and mobile battery replacement in Columbus, done at your vehicle's location.

What to tell dispatch

  • Your vehicle year, make and model
  • Your exact location, including garage level, gate codes or nearest exit
  • What happens when you turn the key or press start
  • Whether the car has needed a jump recently

A real dispatcher confirms availability, the total price and an arrival estimate before you approve anything. There is no membership.
