Diesel Fuel Delivery: What to Know When Your Diesel Runs Dry

Published Oct 23, 2026 · 6 min read · By Hassan, Owner of Roadmate Services

Diesel engines are famous for running forever. On an empty tank, forever is zero miles.

Diesel fuel delivery brings diesel to a stranded car, pickup or semi truck where it stopped. In Columbus we usually bring 2 gallons for a car or pickup, or as much as you ask for, and up to 20 gallons for a semi. A diesel that ran completely dry may need its fuel system primed before it restarts, so tell the dispatcher it is a diesel when you call. Stopped on a highway shoulder? On a highway shoulder? Get safe, then call

  1. Hazards on as soon as the engine starts to stumble.
  2. Coast as far right as you can, or take the exit if you can reach it.
  3. Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on unless there is a fire or other danger.
  4. Call with your direction of travel and the nearest exit or mile marker.

How roadside diesel delivery works: 5 steps

  1. Call (380) 288-2822 and say diesel first. Putting the wrong fuel in a tank is a far bigger problem than being stranded.
  2. Give the vehicle, where it is, and whether it stalled while driving or just would not start.
  3. A dispatcher confirms the price and an arrival estimate before anyone heads your way.
  4. The technician adds the diesel and, if the engine ran dry, helps prime it and get it started.
  5. You drive to the nearest station and fill up properly.

Not sure it is a diesel? The fuel door or the owner’s manual usually says. A sticker that says “diesel fuel only” is about as subtle as diesel gets.

Diesel for cars and pickups: usually 2 gallons

Diesel cars, pickups and vans get the same service as gas cars. We usually bring 2 gallons, or as much as you ask for. That is enough to restart a self-priming engine and reach a station.

All highway diesel sold in the US has been ultra-low sulfur diesel since 2010, according to the EPA. So you do not need to ask for a special grade for a road vehicle. You just need to say diesel, not gas. Your truck has strong opinions on the difference.

Diesel for semi trucks: up to 20 gallons

We also bring diesel to semi trucks, up to 20 gallons. That is a roadside top-up to get a truck moving and to a truck stop, not a fill. Price is quoted by phone, because it depends on how much you need and where the truck is.

We do not carry DEF. If you know exactly which DEF the truck needs, we can pick it up from a parts store on the way, quoted by phone.

Twenty gallons sounds like a lot until you compare it with a semi’s tank. It is a sip, but it is the right sip.

Roadside diesel delivery vs bulk diesel delivery

Search “diesel delivery” and most results are bulk suppliers. They are a different service for a different problem, so it is worth knowing which one you need.

One national supplier, Hart Fueling, describes deliveries of 100 gallons or more for generators and equipment. If you run a fleet or a site tank, that is the kind of company you want. If one truck is stuck on I-71, it is us. Nobody needs a tanker for a pickup.

Why a diesel that ran dry may not restart

When a diesel runs out, air gets drawn into the fuel lines, and a diesel will not run on air. The system has to be cleared, or primed, before it fires. That is why we ask whether it stalled while driving.

Most modern diesels self-prime

Most diesels from the early 2000s on clear the air themselves. The usual routine, as SlashGear explains:

  1. Add a gallon or two of diesel.
  2. Turn the key to on for about 30 seconds without starting, then off.
  3. Crank, but for no more than 10 to 12 seconds at a time, to protect the starter.
  4. Repeat if it does not catch. Some rough idle or white smoke while it clears is normal.

Your owner’s manual has the exact steps for your engine. Some trucks even have a priming routine printed in there that nobody has read since the day it was bought.

Older diesels may need bleeding by hand

Older engines can need the air bled out at the fuel filter or injectors. If yours is one of them, say so when you call so we can send someone equipped for it. If fuel is in, the system is primed and it still will not run, it needs a mechanic. That is a tow to a shop in Columbus, estimated at $125 to $275 for about 1 to 15 miles.

Put gas in your diesel? Do not start it

This is the one time fuel delivery is the wrong call. Gasoline in a diesel can damage the fuel pump and injectors, and the damage grows the longer the engine runs. The most important step is not to start it or drive it, as Jalopnik explains. The tank needs draining at a shop, so the vehicle needs a tow, ideally on a flatbed. Roadmate does not tow misfuelled vehicles, so call a tow company or ask your mechanic who they use.

If you are still at the pump, leave the key out of the ignition. That is the cheapest repair this whole post offers.

5 ways to avoid running a diesel dry

  1. Refill at about a quarter tank. A diesel punishes an empty tank more than a gas engine does. The quarter mark is your friend, not your enemy.
  2. Treat the low-fuel light as now, not soon. Miles-to-empty is an estimate, not a contract.
  3. Plan diesel stops on long trips. Not every station on every exit sells it.
  4. Know whether your engine self-primes. Read that page of the manual before you need it.
  5. Read the label on the pump nozzle before you fuel, every time, even at your usual station.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get diesel delivered to my car on the roadside?

Yes. Tell the dispatcher it is a diesel, what the vehicle is and where it is. We bring diesel to cars, pickups and vans, and up to 20 gallons for a semi truck, across the Columbus area from 6 AM to 8 PM daily.

How much diesel do you bring?

For a car or pickup we usually bring 2 gallons, or as much as you ask for. Enough to start the engine and reach a station. For a semi truck, up to 20 gallons.

Will my diesel start after running out of fuel?

Most modern diesels self-prime: add fuel, turn the key to on for about 30 seconds without starting, then crank in short bursts. Older diesels may need the fuel system bled by hand. If it still will not run, it needs a mechanic.

Is diesel delivery the same as bulk or fleet fueling?

No. Bulk suppliers fill fleets, generators and site tanks on a schedule, usually by the hundred gallons. Roadside diesel delivery is for one stranded vehicle that needs enough fuel to get going again.

I put gasoline in my diesel. Can you bring diesel to fix it?

No, and do not start the engine. Gasoline in a diesel has to be drained before the engine runs, which is a tow to a shop, not a fuel delivery. We do not tow misfuelled vehicles, so call a tow company or your mechanic.

How much does diesel fuel delivery cost?

In Columbus, fuel delivery is estimated at $60 to $110 + fuel cost, with the diesel charged on top and a small extra for diesel. The dispatcher confirms the full price before anyone drives to you. Semi-truck diesel is quoted by phone.

The bottom line

Diesel fuel delivery gets a stranded diesel car, pickup or semi going again where it stopped. Say diesel when you call, mention if it ran dry while driving, and expect to prime the engine before it starts. If gas went into the tank, do not start it: that is a tow company and a shop, not a fuel delivery.
