What Happens If You Put Diesel in a Gas Car?

Published Oct 23, 2026 · 4 min read · By Hassan, Owner of Roadmate Services

Two pump handles look a lot alike when you are in a hurry. Your engine can tell them apart. So, what happens if you put diesel in a gas car? If you have not started it, the fix is usually a tank drain at a shop. If you have, diesel starts clogging the fuel system, so stop the engine as soon as it is safe and get the car towed.

Quick answer: diesel in a gas car at a glance

What happens if you put diesel in a gas engine?

A gas engine lights its fuel with a spark plug. A diesel engine has no spark: it squeezes air until it is hot enough to ignite the fuel, as the U.S. Energy Information Administration explains. Diesel is also thicker and oilier, and a gas engine cannot burn it properly.

In a gasoline car, diesel coats the spark plugs, injectors and fuel lines and clogs the filter. Keep driving and unburned fuel can reach the catalytic converter, which AutoZone calls one of the most expensive emission parts on the car.

Asking a gas engine to run on diesel is like asking a toaster to make soup. It tries, briefly and badly.

Diesel in a gas car: what to do right now

Still at the pump, engine not started

  1. Stop pumping.
  2. Do not start the car or switch on the ignition.
  3. Tell the station attendant.
  4. Call a repair shop and arrange a tow there. Kelley Blue Book says a drain is usually all it needs if the engine never ran.

Already driving

  1. Get safe, then call. Pull off as soon as it is safe, turn on your hazards and switch off the engine.
  2. On a highway shoulder, stay buckled in with hazards on, or get well away from traffic.
  3. Do not restart it to see if it clears. Arrange a tow to a shop.

Signs you put diesel in your car

If you drove off before noticing, AutoZone lists these signs:

  • A hard start, or the engine dies soon after starting
  • Rough idle, misfires and low power
  • Dark smoke from the exhaust
  • The check engine light

Your car is not being dramatic. It is telling you exactly what is in the tank.

How much does it cost to fix diesel in a gas car?

The big difference is whether the engine ran.

SituationPublished repair cost
Engine never startedAbout $200 to $500
Engine started or drivenAbout $1,000 to $3,000 or more

Why it needs a tow, not more fuel

Not everything is a roadside job, and we will say so. Fuel delivery cannot take diesel out, and more gas does not remove it. The tank has to be drained at a shop. Pouring in more gas is like adding water to a flooded basement.

Roadmate does not tow misfuelled cars from gas stations. Call a local tow company, or ask your mechanic who they use; many shops can arrange the tow and the drain together.

When in doubt, ask for a flatbed tow truck: it carries the whole car, so nothing drags.

What happens if you put gas in a diesel engine?

Same rule: do not start it. Gasoline can damage a diesel’s fuel pump and injectors, and the damage grows the longer it runs, as Jalopnik explains. It needs a tow to a shop. Diesel engines are fussy about one thing, and this is that thing.

A diesel that simply ran out is different: see roadside diesel delivery.

How to avoid putting the wrong fuel in your car

  1. Check the label inside the fuel door, especially in a rental or borrowed car.
  2. Diesel pump handles are usually green, but not always. Read the label on the pump itself.
  3. A diesel nozzle is wider than a gas nozzle. If it does not slide in easily, stop and check.

Reading the pump label takes two seconds. A tank drain takes rather longer.

Frequently asked questions

How much diesel will ruin a gas car?

We found no source that publishes a safe amount, not even a gallon. AutoZone says even a small amount can cause clogs, so do not start it.

How do I know if I accidentally put diesel in my car?

Check the receipt or the pump. If you already drove, watch for a hard start, misfires, dark smoke or the check engine light.

Can I just fill up with gas to dilute it?

Neither AutoZone nor Kelley Blue Book suggests it. Both say to leave the engine off and have the tank drained.

Can roadside assistance fix diesel in a gas car?

Not at the roadside. Fuel delivery adds fuel; it cannot take diesel out. The fix is a tow to a shop. Roadmate does not take misfuel jobs, so call a tow company or your mechanic.

The bottom line

Diesel clogs a gas engine, and the damage grows while it runs. Do not start it; if you already drove, pull over when safe and switch it off. Either way, the fix is a tow to a shop.

Wrong fuel, or just out of fuel?
