5 Things to Keep in Your Car for Roadside Emergencies

Mar 15, 2025 · 4 min read

A breakdown is stressful enough without realizing you have nothing useful in the trunk. You don't need a full mechanic's kit. You just need a handful of items that will keep you safe on the shoulder and buy you time until help arrives.

1. A real flashlight (and spare batteries)

Your phone flashlight dies fast and you'll want your phone for the call. A cheap LED flashlight with fresh batteries lives in the glove box and pays for itself the first night you need it.

2. Reflective triangles or road flares

If you're stopped on a highway shoulder, the number one danger isn't your car, it's the traffic behind you. Set warnings out well before your vehicle so drivers see you in time.

3. A portable jump starter

A pocket-sized lithium jump pack costs less than one tow and works without a second car. Keep it charged twice a year and you'll never be stranded by a dead battery in a parking lot.

4. Water, snacks, and a warm layer

Help usually shows up quickly, but "usually" isn't always. A couple of water bottles, a granola bar, and a blanket or hoodie in the trunk turn a bad hour into just an inconvenient one.

5. A phone charger that actually reaches

A long USB cable and a car adapter beat a wireless pad every time. If your battery is dead and the car won't run, a small power bank in the console keeps you reachable.
