Key Fob Not Working? Why It Stopped and How to Fix It

Published Oct 23, 2026 · 7 min read · By Hassan, Owner of Roadmate Services

You press the button, nothing happens, and you press it harder, as if that ever helped. When a key fob is not working, the usual cause is the fob’s own coin cell battery. If your spare fob fails too, the problem is in the car, and most often that is a dead car battery, which needs a jump, not a new fob.

Quick answer: why is my key fob not working?

The spare fob is the fastest test you own. It tells you whether to look at the fob or the car.

Key fob stopped working: the 5 checks, in order

If the fob battery is the suspect, the swap itself is in how to change a key fob battery.

Work down this list. Each check takes a minute or two, and none of them needs tools.

1. Try the spare fob

If the spare opens the doors and starts the car, the first fob is the problem. If the spare fails in the same way, stop blaming the fob and look at the car. The spare is usually in a kitchen drawer at home, which is less helpful at a gas station, but it still settles the question later.

2. Check the fob battery

A weak coin cell shows up as shrinking range first: you have to walk closer, then press twice, then it stops. Toyota says a smart key battery typically lasts one to two years, and many cars warn you with a dash message or a chime before it dies. The cell size is printed on the old battery and in the owner’s manual. Keep new and old coin cells away from small children; they are dangerous if swallowed.

3. Is the car battery dead?

This is the one most guides skip. The locks and the keyless system run on the car’s 12-volt battery. If it is flat, nothing answers the fob, the dash stays dark when you get in and there is no chime. Toyota notes that a discharged 12V battery may stop smart entry from working normally.

In that case the fob did not quit on you. The car battery did, and the fob took the blame. Our guide to the signs your car battery is dying helps you tell, and a jump start in Columbus gets you going. After a jump, we test the battery, the alternator and the charging system.

4. Interference and range

Fobs use weak radio signals. Phones, wireless chargers, other fobs on the same ring and metal phone cases can drown them out. Move the fob away from your phone and hold it close to the door or the start button.

Some people swear by holding the fob under their chin to boost the range. It is the internet’s favourite trick, and we are not going to settle it here.

5. Damage, water and worn buttons

Fobs live hard lives in pockets, cup holders and the occasional washing machine. A cracked case, a dead button or water damage can all stop it sending. If only one button fails, its contact is likely worn.

Key not detected: how to start a push-button car anyway

A “key not detected” or “key fob not detected” message means the car cannot hear the fob, usually because its battery is weak. Almost every push-button car has a backup for exactly this.

  1. Find the backup spot in your owner’s manual. On many cars you touch the fob to the start button; on others it goes in a marked slot, a cup holder pocket or under a console mat.
  2. Hold the fob there, press the brake pedal (or the clutch in a manual), and press the start button. One Honda owner’s manual, for example, says to touch the logo side of the remote to the start button, then press the pedal and the button while it is lit.
  3. Once the engine runs, replace the fob battery soon. The backup is for getting home, not for every day.

If the backup does not work either and the dash lights are on, the car’s receiver or immobiliser may be at fault. That is a dealer visit. It is also worth a free NHTSA recall check by VIN for keyless and ignition recalls.

Key fob still not working with a new battery?

  • Cell upside down. The positive side (the one with the writing) usually faces a specific way. Check the old cell or the manual.
  • Wrong cell. Similar coin cells differ by a fraction of a millimetre, and the fob notices.
  • Bent or dirty contacts. A loose cell rattles and cuts out.
  • Lost sync. Some fobs forget the car after a battery change and need resyncing.

If the spare fob fails too, go back to check 3. A fresh coin cell cannot fix a flat car battery.

How to reset a key fob

Some cars let you resync a fob with a short sequence in the owner’s manual: often turning the ignition on and off, or pressing lock and unlock in a set order. Many newer cars need a dealer or a locksmith with the maker’s equipment. There is no universal reset that works on every car, so skip any video promising one.

A brand-new fob always needs programming to your car. AutoZone puts a replacement fob from about $50 and professional service at $50 to $250, depending on the car. Those are market figures, not Roadmate prices.

To be straight with you: our own technicians do not program key fobs, and we will say so rather than send a truck that cannot fix it. Our locksmith partners do: they program fobs, cut smart keys and handle broken keys and ignition cylinders, and we can put you in touch with one.

Locked out by a dead fob in Columbus

If a child or pet is locked in the car, call 911 first. Then call us if you still need the door opened.

Otherwise, before you call anyone, check for the hidden key:

  1. Slide or press the release on the fob. Most fobs hide a mechanical key blade inside.
  2. Find the keyhole on the driver’s door handle. It is often behind a small cap you pop off.
  3. Open the door. If the alarm goes off, your owner’s manual explains how to stop it.

If the keys are locked inside, our lockout service in Columbus opens the car with proper tools. The estimated range is $75 to $175. After hours, at weekends, or on a smart-key or luxury car it can cost more, quoted by phone or on site.

If the fob itself is the problem, our technician can bring a new coin cell and fit it on site. If the car battery is dead, a jump start is estimated at $75 to $150. For keys locked inside, our guide on what to do when you are locked out of your car covers the rest.

We work 6 AM to 8 PM daily, Eastern Time, and arrive in about 32 minutes on average, depending on traffic, weather and location. Long enough to finish a coffee; not long enough to start a new one.

Frequently asked questions

How do you fix an unresponsive key fob?

Try the spare fob first. If the spare works, replace the coin cell in the dead fob. If neither works and the dash is dark, the car battery is the likely cause, and it needs a jump.

Why is my key fob not working even with a new battery?

Usually the cell is upside down, the wrong size or loose on a bent contact, or the fob lost its pairing with the car. If the spare fails too, look at the car battery.

How do you start a car if the key fob doesn't work?

Hold the fob against the start button, or put it in the backup slot, then press the brake and the start button. Your owner's manual shows the exact spot.

Why does my car say key not detected?

The car cannot pick up the fob's signal, usually because the fob battery is weak or something nearby is interfering. Move the fob closer to the start button or use the backup start spot.

Can a dead car battery make the key fob stop working?

Yes. The locks and keyless system run on the car's 12-volt battery, so a flat car battery ignores a healthy fob. Open the door with the hidden key blade, then jump the car.

How do I reset my key fob?

Some cars resync a fob with a short sequence in the owner's manual. Many newer cars need a dealer or a locksmith; no one sequence works on every car.

The bottom line

A key fob that stops working usually needs a new coin cell. If the spare fails too, look at the car battery. The hidden key blade gets you in, the backup start spot gets you going, and programming is dealer or locksmith work.
