How to Unlock a Steering Wheel When the Key Won't Turn
Published Oct 23, 2026 · 5 min read · By Hassan, Owner of Roadmate Services
The wheel won’t budge and the key won’t turn. How to unlock a steering wheel: turn the wheel gently toward the side where it has a little play, and hold it there while you turn the key or press start. The lock pin slides back and the wheel and key both move.
Light pressure does it. Pull hard and the pin only grips tighter, which is the opposite of the plan.

Quick answer: what to try, by situation
| If this is you | Try this |
|---|---|
| Key car, wheel won't move | Light pressure toward the side with play, turn the key at the same time |
| Push-button car | Foot on the brake, rock the wheel gently, press start |
| Fob not detected | Hold the fob in the backup spot from your owner's manual |
| Dim lights, no crank | Weak 12-volt battery: jump or charge it, then try again |
| Key goes in but won't turn | Check Park, try the spare key, then a locksmith |
| No key at all | Locksmith or dealer, with proof of ownership |
| In short | Light pressure and patience, never force |
Why does a steering wheel lock?
It is an anti-theft feature. Turn the wheel with the engine off and a pin drops into a notch in the steering column. As NAPA Know How puts it, “steering wheels lock as a safety feature to keep the vehicle from moving when the key isn’t in the ignition.”
It usually happens after parking with the wheels turned, or bumping the wheel on the way out. The column just picked the one morning you were in a hurry to take its job seriously.
How to unlock a car steering wheel with a key
- Put the key fully into the ignition.
- Turn the wheel a little each way. It moves slightly further in one direction.
- Hold light pressure on the wheel in that direction.
- At the same time, turn the key toward on. You may feel a click as the pin lets go.
- Still stuck? Rock the wheel gently back and forth while you keep light turning pressure on the key.
Rocking the wheel feels like negotiating with your car. Most locks give in within a few tries.
How to unlock a steering wheel on a push-button car
Many push-button cars use an electronic steering lock. The idea is the same. Kelley Blue Book gives these steps:
- Keep the key fob inside the car, away from your phone and anything metal.
- Press the brake pedal.
- Turn the wheel gently toward the side with play.
- Press start while you hold that light pressure.
- If the dash says the key is not detected, hold the fob in the backup spot your owner’s manual shows, often on the column or in the console, and press start again.
If it still will not release, the 12-volt battery is the next suspect. For other reasons a keyless car stays silent, see why a push button start car won’t start.
Key not turning in the ignition? Other causes
If the wheel moves freely and the key still won’t turn, check these in order.
The car isn’t fully in Park
Press the brake and move the lever firmly into Park again. On a manual, press the clutch.
The 12-volt battery is weak or dead
Kelley Blue Book lists a low 12-volt battery among the reasons a wheel will not release. Dim dash lights or no crank are the clues. A jump or a charge usually frees it.
The key is worn, bent or the wrong one
Worn cuts stop the key lining up with the pins in the cylinder. Try your spare. If the spare turns, the old key has retired without telling you.
The ignition lock cylinder is worn
If the key gets harder to turn week by week, even with a free wheel and a good spare, the cylinder may be wearing out. That is a locksmith or dealer repair. A key that turns but will not come out is a different problem: why your key is stuck in the ignition.
How to open a steering wheel lock without the key
You can’t, safely. The lock exists to stop the car moving without its key, and prying or drilling the column breaks expensive parts. If the key is lost, a locksmith or your dealer can make a new one once you show you own the car. We work with locksmith partners and can put you in touch with one.
If the key is sitting on the seat of a locked car, that is a lockout, and we do those: see our car lockout service in Columbus. If a child or pet is locked in the car, call 911 first.
What not to do
- Do not yank the wheel or force the key. A key snapped off in the cylinder is a locksmith job.
- Do not spray household oil into the ignition. It collects dirt.
- Do not take the column apart at the roadside. It holds wiring and the airbag connection.
The steering lock is like a bouncer: shouting gets you nowhere, the right key shown calmly gets you in.
When it’s a locksmith, a tow or a jump
Not every locked wheel is a roadside job, and we will tell you which one yours is.
- Dim lights, no crank: likely the battery. We jump start the car, then test the battery, alternator and charging system, and replace a bad battery on site.
- Worn key, worn cylinder or no key: a locksmith or dealer. We can connect you with a locksmith partner.
- Wheel stays locked and the car has to move: a car that cannot steer cannot be driven. It needs a tow to your dealer or shop, and a flatbed is the safer choice when the wheels cannot turn.
In Columbus, a jump start is an estimated $75 to $150 and a local tow an estimated $125 to $275.
A dispatcher confirms the price before anyone drives to you. Before you pay for an ignition repair, run your VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. Some models have had ignition or steering lock recalls that a dealer fixes for free.
Frequently asked questions
How do I unlock my steering wheel?
Put the key in, find the side where the wheel has a little play, and hold light pressure that way while you turn the key. The lock pin slides back and both the key and the wheel move. Hard pulling only pins it tighter.
How do you unlock a steering wheel on a push-button start car?
Keep the fob inside the car, press the brake, gently rock the wheel toward the side with play and press start. If the car says the key is not detected, hold the fob in the backup spot your owner's manual shows and try again.
Can a dead battery cause the steering wheel to lock?
A dead battery does not lock the wheel, but on many newer cars it can stop an electronic steering lock from releasing. Dim dash lights and no crank point to the 12-volt battery. A jump or a charge usually frees it.
Can you unlock a steering wheel without the key?
Not safely. The lock is there to stop the car moving without its key, and forcing it damages the column. A locksmith or dealer can make a new key once you show you own the car.
Can the steering wheel lock while driving?
The steering lock should never engage while the car is moving. If the steering suddenly feels very heavy on the road, that points to a power steering problem: slow down, pull over when it is safe and have it checked.

The bottom line
Hold light pressure toward the side with play while you turn the key or press start. On push-button cars, press the brake and try the fob backup spot. Dim lights point to the battery. A worn key, worn cylinder or lost key is a locksmith or dealer job.
