Can You Drive on a Cracked Rim? What to Do Instead

Can you drive on a cracked rim? You should not. A crack can grow, let the air out or give way, and the tire fails with it. Put the spare on, or get help where the car sits. A cracked rim is never a roadside repair.

On Saturday, October 24, we had one in Columbus. A 2020 Mazda CX-5 swerved to avoid something on the road and hit a curb. The front rim cracked, the tire tore open, and there was no spare. The car was parked outside the owner’s garage and had to go inside, or it would be towed.

Why driving on a cracked rim is risky

The rim holds the tire’s bead tight and carries the weight of that corner of the car. A crack weakens both jobs. TireGrades notes that cracks can grow the more you drive on them, and a weak spot that leaks slowly in a parking lot can fail at speed.

Where the crack is matters more than how long it is. Performance Plus Tire’s guide treats cracks in the spokes, the hub face, the lug holes and the bead seat as do-not-drive. It also warns that a cracked wheel can still hold air. So “the tire looks fine” is not a pass.

Our CX-5 did not leave room for debate. When a chunk of the rim is missing, the wheel has already voted.

Signs your rim is cracked, not just scraped

  • A line in the metal, or a piece missing from the lip, like the photo above
  • A tire that keeps losing air with no nail in it
  • Thumping, vibration in the steering wheel, or the car pulling to one side, the signs YourMechanic lists
  • A torn or bulging tire next to fresh curb damage

Curb rash, the light scrapes on the edge, is cosmetic. A bend is a flat spot or a wobble and can sometimes be straightened. A crack is a line through the metal. If you are not sure which you have, treat it as a crack. The curb always wins the argument.

What to do after you hit a curb or pothole

On I-70, I-71, I-270 or any highway, get safe, then call. Hazards on, pull as far off as you can, and stay buckled in or move well away from traffic. Do not change a wheel on the traffic side of a shoulder.

  1. Pull over somewhere flat and out of traffic. Do not keep driving to “see if it is OK”.
  2. Look at the wheel and tire, both sides if you can. Note any line, missing piece or tear.
  3. If you have a usable spare and a safe spot, put it on. Our guide to driving on a spare covers how far and how fast.
  4. Find your wheel lock key before you need it. Keep it in the glove box, not at home or in a bag. Lost it? See what to do without a wheel lock key.
  5. No spare, or no safe spot? Do not drive on it. Call for help and have your tire size ready.

If the tire is torn but the rim is clean, the sidewall damage guide explains why a sidewall cannot be patched. And if you are tempted to roll on the flat for a few blocks, read can you drive on a flat tire first.

How we got the CX-5 moving with no spare

I was there in about 10 minutes to look at it. The rim could not be saved, and the other front tire was scuffed too. Then I spent the afternoon looking for a matching rim. By about 5 PM, none could be found.

So we changed the plan: two new tires and a temporary wheel, so the car could roll today, and the matching rim later. I got them from a tire shop we work with and came back about 2 hours later to fit them.

She had thought it would have to be towed. Both of them were very happy, and she even liked the look of the temporary wheel. One thing went right before we arrived: after an earlier flat stalled over a missing wheel lock key, she had new locks put on and had the key ready this time.

Newer cars often come with no spare, and matching rims are hard to find the same day. A temporary wheel is not glamorous, but it beats a tow truck in the driveway.

Should you repair or replace a cracked rim?

Most cracked rims are replaced, as YourMechanic puts it, while a bent rim can sometimes be repaired. A wheel shop may weld a single, clean crack in the barrel or outer lip, according to Performance Plus Tire, but not cracks in the spokes, hub face, lug holes or bead seat. That is a wheel shop decision, made with the wheel off the car.

Whatever you choose, check the spare while you are thinking about it. NHTSA’s tire safety page covers pressure and tread checks.

Cracked rim in Columbus? Here is how we help

If you have a good spare, you may not need us at all. If you cannot change it safely, a tire change in Columbus has an estimated range of $85 to $175.

With no usable spare, we can take the wheel to a tire shop, have a tire fitted and bring it back, or bring a replacement tire; that is quoted by phone. We work 6 AM to 8 PM daily, Eastern Time, and arrive in about 32 minutes on average, depending on traffic, weather and location.

Frequently asked questions

Can you drive on a cracked rim?

It is not a good idea. A crack can spread, let air out or give way, and some cracks still hold air while they get worse. Put the spare on or get help where the car is.

Can a cracked rim be repaired?

Sometimes. A wheel shop can weld a single crack in the barrel or the outer lip, but cracks in the spokes, the bead seat, the hub face or around the lug holes mean a new wheel. Most cracked rims end up replaced.

How do I know if my rim is cracked or just bent?

A crack is a line or a missing piece in the metal; a bend is a flat spot or a wobble in the lip. Both can cause vibration and slow leaks. If you see a line in the metal, treat it as a crack.

What do I do with a cracked rim and no spare?

Do not drive on it. You can have the tire and a wheel brought to you, use a temporary wheel until the right rim arrives, or have the car towed. Tell the dispatcher your tire size when you call.

Can you fix a cracked rim on the roadside?

No. A crack is not something anyone should patch at the curb. What a roadside technician can do is get a safe wheel and tire on the car so you can move it.

The bottom line

Do not drive on a cracked rim. Get off the road, put on a usable spare if you have one, and leave crack repairs to a wheel shop. With no spare, a tire and a temporary wheel can get the car moving the same day.
